California unemployment rate dipped slightly to 12.3 percent in June, compared to 12.4 percent in May, the California Employment Development Department (EDD) said on Friday.
While the employment situation stagnated, 27,600 jobs were lost in June as census positions expired, the department said.
Meanwhile, more than 400,000 others ran out of unemployment benefits, prompting fears for a double-dip recession, according to the department.
The state's unemployment rate was 11.6 percent in June 2009.
Nationwide, the unemployment rate dipped from 9.7 percent in May to 9.5 percent last month.
"The road to economic recovery is long and difficult, and that' s why it is so important that the state not hinder progress," California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said in response to the EDD report. |
